Discussion:
25 TOP COMMEDIANS - WAS THIS IN REVERSE ORDER ?

Channel 5 ran a programme tonight pretending to
list the 25 most popular comedians.

In position 25 was Paul Merton and in 24 was Russ
Abbott, both of whom I find funny and enjoyable
to watch. (I also like Ian Hislop.)

But in position 2 was the sleazy and tedious Victoria
Wood, who has never made me even smile and who I
find utterly unfunny and frequently offensive.

To be fair, I am perhaps not the best judge of this
smirking feminist terrorist, because as soon as she
appears I switch off, or over, because she makes my
stomach knot !

And in position 1 was the foul mouthed and frankly
boring Billy Connolly, whose only way of raising a
laugh is by the play ground use of obscene language.

His tours television tours were boredom on 3 wheels
and his commentaries were what you would expect
from an aging hippy with the brain of a pea and the
taste of a post modernist trendy twerp.

It was slightly amusing 20 years ago, but when you
have heard it a few 100 times, frankly it ceases to be
funny and just makes you cringe.

But then, he was selling the left wing package of sly
trash, so that would be ok with the people handing
him our money.

Like all genuine comedians, Russ Abbott never used
bad language or made sleazy innuendoes - and yet
was always funny and entertaining and left you with a
genuine feeling of pleasure and well being.

The same is true, of course, of all the real comedians,
like The Two Ronnies, Morecomb and Wise, John
Cleese - and even Benny Hill - who used blatant titillation
but never stooped to vile language or the sort of open hard
core filth used by the likes of the disgusting Wood
woman.

What sickening hypocrisy that Benny Hill is never
seen on the BBC any more, because he offends the
feminist Nazis, but a foul, boring, fat baggage like
Victoria Wood is OK to shove down our throats !

I also find Dawn French irritating rather than funny,
and her portrayal of an English vicar was from time
to time blasphemous and offensive. It smacked of
"anything for a cheap laugh".

This selection was claimed to be made as the result
of a telephone poll. Where did they run it ? On
planet Zog - or was it Golders Green ?

That television has been dumbed down to the point
where there is nobody funny left who would be
capable of running a comedy series is due to the
sort of talentless gutter filth who have been allowed
to take over our broadcasting.

They are thick, depraved and boring - and they are
far more interested in left wing public brain washing
than in either reporting the news or providing any
entertainment.

So what does our panel here in the newsgroups think ?

Does anybody find Victoria Wood funny - or do you
think she was created as a propaganda tool by the tiny
London liberal fascist minority that has infected our
broadcasters like maggots infest rotten meat ?

And is there anybody who does not find the real
comedians I have mentioned above good entertainment
and a good laugh ? Has anybody else notice that
there are none of them left - and no replacements
around ?

I think swearing and sex is an excuse for a talentless
comedians with connections amongst the media
scum who have taken over our broadcasting and,
therefore, were given opportunities they did not deserve,
and that real comedians don't need to use and
don't use.

I would like to see and hear less of both on television
- if only because I don't find them funny and I am
bored to death by them.

So what do you think ?

You won't like Chubby Brown then, but I find him hilarious!
Rik Mayall and Adrian Edmondson get me howling along with Mr Bean:-))
Vic reeves would make a good hole in the ground and with Billy Bugger
me Connolly the two could start a new career as muder victims.

Since I gave the TV set away two years ago I rarely watch it except
when visiting friends and they don't turn it off, ugh!

Caught a glimpse of it tonight, some shit about actors and
professionals playing make believe, then something about a bloke being
done for playing feel up clothes followed by some bloke building a bark
canoe.
Went outside and looked at the stars, much more interesting and true to
life.

He is quite clever really if you listen.

Benny Hill was on ITV by the way not BBC!

Ali G is the funniest I have seen so far though.

Oops !

| Ali G is the funniest I have seen so far though.

You cannot be serious ! I find him deeply and
profoundly offensive and one of the nastiest and
most brazenly exploitive of all the so-called comedians.

On the brief occasions I have seen him on television
I want to smash the set.

You have a point !

But the main influence on the populous is the culture.
Or what passes for culture. So it is important to
keep an eye on what they are up to in the media.

We have an informal group of media monitors who
exist mainly to keep an eye on what is being said and
not said on the news, but I and a few others also
keep an informal watch on how the entertainment side
of things is being exploited for political/social engineering
purposes.

Very few people seem to understand how powerful
an influence is exerted by culture, especially popular
culture.

I agree with you, completely..

But these "Best Of... " and "Favourite 100...etc.. really are so
obviously make-weights and I hope nobody takes them seriously.

The results (I missed this last one) are so unrealistic.

I do wonder who is polled and how... ?

|
| Agree with Paul Merton and Ian Hislop. Russ Abbott could raise the
odd
| chuckle, but generally very bland to my taste.

I can understand how he might have been a bit too nice
for some tastes, but he always left you with a nice warm
glow - without being cloying or sickly in the way some
modern comedians playing for sympathy can be. And I
absolutely adored his "teddy boy" sketches.

I thought they were beautifully observed and brilliantly
executed to the point of genius. He is now a Shakespearian
actor - and I think he is a national treasure !

I wish they would re-run the series !

! Best stand up routines going recently are Alan Davies, Ross Noble,
Bill
| Bailey, Harry Hill, Jimmy Carr, Emo Philips and for a real "off the
wall"
| choice, Dimitri Martin. None of these uses excess amounts of bad
language
| and each treads a line between good writing, one-liners, surrealism
and word
| play. Tastes change. Not to your taste does not mean no good.
|
|
| If you're bored to death by them, switch off and do something
useful.

I usually do, Colin. As testimony to which I have
to confess to having never heard of any of the people
you list in your paragraph above !

Oh, except Bill Bailey, but only because my daughter
bought me a DVD for Christmas. But I found him a
bit "sniggery left wing" and that kow-towing to the media
creeps who control our television I found a big turn off.

His jokes were stale and had all been done before and
he left me feeling a bit queasy. He is not somebody you
would want as a chum.

| Jokes been done before? You mean the Countdown theme tune as an
Irish Reel,
| and a German electropop version of the hokey cokey with Kraftwerk as
guest
| stars? Are you sure you mean the same Bill Bailey? He's one of the
most
| original comics out there.

Well, yes. But they are really re-workings of things that
have been done better before by other people.

And I really did not see the point of the Irish Reel or
Kraftwerk - and I certainly did not find them at all funny.

| Oh and I was sure you'd have heard of Alan Davies. Regular on QI,
and
| played the title role in Jonathan Creek. Jimmy Carr also usually
presents
| the "top 50" type programmes on Channel 5. Would be surprised if he
didn't
| present the one you're talking about.

It was presented by the most excellent Brian Blessed,
who has more talent in his little finger than most of those
he was presenting.

As for those you mention, sorry, I have no idea who they
are.

(Brian Blessed was proposed for "Room 101" by some
third class little jumped up news whore from Channel 5,
but Paul Merton quite rightly refused to dump him in the
bin, describing him, accurately, as a "national treasure".

Which he is.

Why are these third rate gutter sluts from the news rooms
exalted to star status by the media vermin, one wonders ?

Well, actually, one does not wonder at all. It is utterly
blatant and the extermination of the filth in question is a
simple matter of essential vermin control and a matter
of public health.)

He was good 30 years ago.

No-one else had made such astute observations about working class life
as a child, at school, in dealings with the church, at work.

The family we have in Scotland disliked him. "It's just vulgarity"

But despite their disquiet I do think his observations were worthy of
record. Not much is left to represent what the working class achieved in
the '50s and '60s.

Some of the best ships in the world were built on the Clyde, and all
there is now to show for it is yuppy flats and Thai restaurants.
